A description is given of the gait and balance laboratory of the Department of Geriatric Medicine of the University of Birmingham, and of the program of tests devised for use in elderly persons. These can be undertaken without discomfort or anxiety to the subjects. They are yielding data that should assist in the management of disorders of gait and balance in the elderly.
