Objectives and admission criteria are discussed as they pertain to day hospitals for patients with physical disability or chronic illness as distinct from patients with primary psychiatric illness. The day hospital, as part of a general hospital complex, provides health care and supportive services during the day for accepted patients, who return home at night. The new Day Hospital of the Burke Rehabilitation Center is described in these terms and also with special reference to their research program for obtaining extensive data on admission criteria, cost of service, and the resulting benefits.
