ABSTRACT: The macula lutea of the retina in the human eye is the area of clearest central vision. However, it is the area most vulnerable to hereditary and degenerative disorders. It is also susceptible to certain metabolic, general and infectious diseases. The modern theories regarding such vulnerability are discussed under the headings of anatomy, development, genetic factors, pathology and physiology. Since disorders of the macula are a common cause of loss of vision in the elderly, it is hoped that this presentation will help internists and generalists toward a better understanding of this disabling disease of the eye.
