The inaugural meeting of the Western Division of the American Geriatrics Society was held on October 10, 1972 in the Los Angeles Hilton Hotel, Los Angeles, California. These introductory remarks outline the purposes of the American Geriatrics Society, as part of the plan for better health care that should not wait for government implementation. These efforts are particularly pertinent for the southwestern United States where so many elderly people have moved. Mental and physical health and continued productivity are the goals.
