In 1960 Smigel et al., in trying to assess Asian's claims for the value of procaine therapy, reported on the effect of procaine in 50 geriatric patients (of whom 21 were controls). A decrease in the serum cholesterol level was observed in 23 of the 29 procaine patients, although no special importance was attached to this fact. The present writers subjected these cholesterol data to statistical analysis and believe that they may be statistically significant. Further study seems merited.
