More than three‐fourths of all demented patients seen in one psychiatric ward of a university hospital during a two‐year period were discharged within thirty days. Almost half of the group were able to return home from the hospital, and less than one‐third were committed to a state hospital. These results support the view that admission to the psychiatric ward of a general hospital for medical‐psychiatric assessment of dementia can be worth while. However, further investigation is needed to determine how well the short‐term rehabilitation function of the ward serves to ease the transition of these patients from one setting to another.
