Two clinical entities of pain in the anterior abdominal wall are described. One of these is due to the lower ribs “kissing” the iliac crest and bruising the soft tissues in patients with dorsal kyphosis. The other is due to referred pain from spondylosis of the lower dorsal spine. Both may be mistaken for acute or chronic intra‐abdominal disease, and the patient subjected to unnecessary laparotomy in error.
