A bstract To evaluate the influence of a coronary care unit (CCU) on mortality from myocardial infarction, a retrospective analysis of the data on 977 patients who had 1,014 episodes of infarction is presented. Comparisons of data for the year before establishment of the CCU with the data for the first year and the third year of CCU operation did not reveal any significant improvement in over‐all hospital mortality figures. However, the mortality rate in CCU patients was lower than in non‐CCU patients, and salvage after cardiac resuscitation was much higher in the CCU. Arrythmias were recognized more frequently and congestive failure was recognized earlier in the CCU.
