A bstract The academic and clinical training of speech pathologists and audiologists must include working with the geriatric population, especially if these clinicians anticipate private practice with Medicare patients. The course of study should include a review of the literature, and training in observation, diagnosis, direct therapy, supportive therapy, and research projects. Such a comprehensive experience will demonstrate to the students that the communicative problems of the aged are unique and require treatment by specially trained personnel using special procedures, and that it is detrimental to the clinician and to his profession if he attempts to treat geriatric patients without previous training or experience in this area.
