A bstract We are now confronted with an enormous problem—our aging population, involving many millions of persons. Our nation is not preparing to meet this problem adequately, either economically or medically. Several of the challenges are outlined: prevention of disease (with special reference to cardiovascular disease), retirement problems, medical school training in geriatrics, and economic priorities. Hard examination of present attitudes and inadequate systems is needed, as well as a great deal of rethinking and retooling of our national effort to meet the future needs. The American Geriatrics Society should assume a more significant position of leadership in this progressive movement.
