A bstract Clavicular cortical thickness measured in postero‐anterior chest roentgenograms was decreased in 53 patients after gastrectomy as compared with 447 males and 277 females in apparent health and 122 males and 109 females with peptic ulcer not surgically treated. This decline in clavicular cortical thickness became more pronounced as years elapsed after gastrectomy. Gastrectomy appeared to have accelerated the age‐dependent bone loss, possibly through interfering with calcium absorption and other nutritional intake.
