A bstract : Tears of the knee meniscus are contrasted in the young versus the elderly. The diagnosis may prove difficult in the elderly, as often there is no definite history of trauma. Characteristic signs and symptoms and methods for examination are outlined. Early menisectomy may prevent erosion of the cartilage and degenerative changes in the joint.
