A bstract : Objective evidence is cited of substantial progress in nursing home legislation, care of the patients, new construction, and a healthier attitude on the part of society for the continued care of the chronically ill aged. However, these are countered by many cross currents at all levels in the medico‐social revolution of medical care. Although there is much progress, the uncertainty of the future in all areas of our society provides little room for complacency. Creative ideas are abundant, but stability remains elusive.
