A bstract 100 aphasic Medicare (over age 65) patients were studied with respect to age and sex, duration and severity of symptoms, and length of speech therapy. These patients were referred to a speech pathology service in a rehabilitation center. In general, Medicare aphasic patients are older, more severely impaired, and seek services earlier in comparison to previously reported populations of aphasic patients. There is need for studying alternative methods of management for the severely aphasic group.
