A bstract The polygraph technique, a professional method for detecting deception, has wide application in medical and legal circles and in the evaluation of employees and applicants for jobs. In the specific environment of the polygraph interview, some emotional problems may come to the surface. In this way, the technique also may be of psychotherapeutic value. Although no one can hold a brief for the infallibility or complete innocuousness of the procedure, its constructive aspects merit recognition in balance with all other considerations. As a part of the broad process of evaluation, the polygraph can make a significant contribution. As with other ancillary procedures, it deserves a place in the field of medical and psychological evaluation.
