A bstract A 36‐year‐old woman had two successive primary cancers of the breast (left, right) removed surgically. At the time of the second mastectomy a bilateral salpingo‐oophorectomy also was performed. Unexpectedly, a breast cancer metastasis was found in the right Fallopian tube; infiltrating cancer was also present in the left ovary. Although reports in the literature increasingly indicate that the length of survival after breast cancer is not dependent upon the more radical forms of treatment, the history of the case described here brings up the question of whether or not contralateral mastectomy and bilateral salpingo‐oophorectomy at the time of the first breast operation would help to prevent the development of a second primary breast cancer.
