A bstract An investigation of the sedative‐tranquilizing effects of methaqualone (Quaalude) by the double‐blind, placebo‐controlled crossover method was started on 50 patients (38 females and 12 males) with the anxiety‐tension syndrome, whose average age was 79 years; 35 patients completed the study. From analysis of the clinical data it is concluded that methaqualone is effective as a sedative or mild tranquilizer in geriatric patients. The subjective responses indicated that it improved the general condition of 30 of the 35 patients. There was a statistically significant difference between the number of patients who improved with methaqualone and the number who improved with placebo. Side effects were few and occurred about equally during the placebo and the methaqualone treatment periods. As a secondary observation—3 of 5 women who were taking nonsteroidal anti‐inflammatory drugs for osteoarthritis volunteered the information that the pain was less during methaqualone therapy.
