A bstract Near the second anniversary of the beginning of Medicare, the statistics are discussed from the viewpoints of costs, efficiency, shortage of personnel, incentives and changes in requirements and payment methods. Despite the changes already necessitated in the Medicare program and the many changes that are certain to be made in the future, we can all share in its current success. Medicare is operating very well and is accomplishing its objective of helping the elderly citizens of this nation to meet their health costs with dignity and self‐respect.
