A bstract Older persons in our society are forced into retirement arbitrarily and thus experience great difficulty in psychosocial adjustment. The social benefits provided by society fail to foster the original aims of the program; as a result the older person must seek additional aid or part‐time employment. The purpose of this report is to describe a foster grandparent program designed to promote better psycho‐social adjustment for older persons. An informal scale for assessing psycho‐social needs is presented. The results obtained with use of this scale indicated that the foster grandparents felt more positively about specified psycho‐social items after taking part in this program than before participation. Hence it is concluded that a foster grandparent program can counteract some of the negative aspects of aging and society's attitude toward the process.
