The contention that the diatom genera Ellerbeckia and Actinocyclus are congeneric on the basis of images of valves of the latter lying inside those of the former is disputed. It is suggested that conclusive evidence is lacking and that too few questions were asked to allow for the possibility that the two genera, one incorrectly identified to species and the other not identified at all, were lying together simply because they happened to fit.
