SUMMARY Simultaneous assimilation of NH 4 and NO 3 by Gelidium nudifrons Gardner was observed in culture experiments of 4 possible combinations of NH 4 and NO 3 . The combinations tested were those in which the concentration of both N sources were in the range of 3.0–4.0 μg‐atN · l −1 ; both in the range of 0.5–1.0 μg‐atN · l −1 ; one in the 3.0–4.0 μg‐atN · l −1 range and the other in the 0.5–1.0 μg‐atN · l −1 range; and, visa versa. The data suggest that the pools of both NH 4 and NO 3 are simultaneously available for algal assimilation.
