SUMMARY The size and photosynthetic ability of Cyanidium caldarium populations in soil were related to the water status of the soil, welter soil, areas having larger populations and more extensive photosynthesis. The application of the direct methods used to the study of other soil algae, mosses, and lichens is discussed.
