SUMMARY The marine dinoflagellate , Glenoclinium foliaceum Stein, has been shown to contain fucoxanthin, instead of peridinin, as the major xanthophyll. In addition, 2 carotenes–β‐carotene and a compound with spectral properties reminiscent of isomerized y‐carotene–and 2 xanthophylls–diadinoxanthin and an unidentified compound–were also isolated. These results support an earlier work that indicated the possible presence of fucoxanthin in some members of the Pyrrophyta.
