Summary: The improvement of quality of life (QOL) is now widely accepted as an important goal of health care. Underlying the acceptance of QOL is the unspoken assumption that therapies and practices associated with QOL are inherently beneficial. The uses of QOL in the treatment of epilepsy need scrutiny. Close attention must be given to the effects of policies instituted in the name of QOL, as significant social consequences may result from these policies.
