A review of 2,165 pregnancies indicated that the seizure frequency increased in 522 pregnancies (24%), whereas the number of seizures decreased in 492 pregnancies (23%) and remained unchanged in the remaining 1,151 pregnancies (53%). The pooled data tend to exaggerate the changes of seizure frequency during pregnancy because the definitions of what constitutes an increase or a decrease vary considerably in the different. studies. Hormonal and metabolic factors. respiratory changes, psychological problems, noncompliance, and the altered disposition of antiepileptic drugs may modify the seizure frequency during pregnancy. Among these factors, noncompliance and changes in antiepileptic drug disposition seem to be more important. There are no reliable data which allow prediction of an individual's course of epilepsy during pregnancy. The onset of epilepsy during pregnancy seems to be due to coincidence. Status epilepticus is not more frequent during pregnancy, but presents a life-threatening emergency for mother and child.
