EEG Paroxysms and Echo‐encephalography

SUMMARY Diminution of the range of echo‐pulsations was found before and during paroxysmal discharges in the EEG of 28 of 30 epileptic patients examined. In 22 patients the echo‐pulsations changed in range frequently and in 6 patients rarely; in 2 it did not occur at all. In no patient was the diminution in range of the echo‐pulsations invariable. The phenomenon is presumably related to the ictal diminution in pulsations of those cortical arteries supplying an epileptogenic area. In our patients, however, the diminution in pulsations preceded 3/sec spike‐and‐wave as well as focal and generalized discharges, a finding which has not been reported previously. RÉSUMÉ On a trouvé une diminution dans le spectre des écho‐pulsations avant et pendant les décharges paroxystiques sur l'EEG chez 28 des 30 patients épileptiques examinés. Les écho‐pulsations changeaient de spectre fréquemment chez 22 patients, rarement chez 6 patients et pas du tout chez 2 autres. Chez aucun patient, la diminution du spectre de l'écho‐pulsation était invariable. Le phénomène est vraisemblablement en relation avec la diminution pendant les décharges, des pulsations des artères corticales qui irriguent l'aire épileptogène. Chez nos patients, cependant la diminution des pulsations précédait l'apparition des décharges de pointe‐ondes à 3 cycles par seconde aussi bien que les décharges focales et généralisées, fait qui n'a jamais été signalé auparavant.
