SYNOPSIS Precipitants of individual migraine attacks were studied in 23 migraineurs. Patients were aware of 91 precipitants (average 4 per patient); by direct questioning we could add a further 127 (average 5.5 per patient) provoking factors for migraine episodes. Avoiding these stimuli reduced attacks from 2 to 1g per month in 19 of the 23 patients without prophylactic drugs. Lessened severity or better analgesic control was noted by some. In 4 of the 23 patients the frequency of attacks remained unchanged.
