SYNOPSIS The purpose of this paper is to highlight the association between deteriorating family situations and conflicts, and exacerbation of head pain. Many headache sufferers seen at a university‐based headache clinic reveal complex family‐related problems which may have had a negative effect on their head pain. It is argued that family assessment and treatment, if indicated, has considerable therapeutic value both for the patient's headache as well as overall functioning of the family.
