SYNOPSIS A simple bedside test is described using the Valsalva maneuver and superficial temporal artery compression which permits discrimination of extracranial vascular dilatation headache from intracranial vascular dilatation headache. The test is useful as an aid in determining the type of headache in an acute situation. It may also have a useful role in determining ergot responsiveness.
