Dr. C.: Mrs. X is a licensed practical nurse of thirty-two with no family history of headache. Her own headaches began at about the time her periods began, which may have been at age thirteen or fourteen. Sometimes her cycle was normal and sometimes as long as sixty to ninety days. A normal cycle produced no headache, but a long cycle would bring on several headaches at the onset of the period. The headaches were originally on either side of the head. They later occurred only on the right side and had become a frequent problem by 1966 at age twenty. They were not accompanied by nausea or vomiting. They were sometimes accompanied by photophobia. In 1967, at age twenty-one, she married and had her first and uneventful pregnancy shortly thereafter. With the marriage and the first pregnancy, headaches disappeared from her history and she remained free of headache until 1971. In that year, her second pregnancy began and was heralded by severe constant headache which came on before she knew she was pregnant and ceased only upon delivery.
