Fluphenazine for Tension Headache; Double‐Blind Study

SYNOPSIS Fluphenazine, a fluorinated piperazine derivative of phenothiazine was compared with placebo in a double‐blind study of 50 patients with tension headache. Daily dose of fluphenazine was 1 mg. The trial was completed by 48 patients. Treatment periods were 2 months each. Days with headache diminished significantly more during treatment with fluphenazine than placebo (P < 0.001). Duration ot the headache decreased and severity of pain was reduced significantly with fluphenazine. Mean quantities of analgesics used during one headache day was 1.6 on fluphenazine and 2.5 on placebo (P < 0.001). Thirty‐six patients considered fluphenazine and one placebo as the superior drug. Side effects were reported by 19 patients on fluphenazine and 15 on placebo. Two patients interrupted fluphenazine trial because of extrapyramidal dyskinesias.
