Aspirin is probably the most effective medication available for the relief of minor pain. It provides the cornerstone of treatment for tension headache, used either by itself or in combination with other sedatives and analgesics. The incidence of side effects of chronic aspirin ingestion is low, though these side effects may be relatively serious, and produce unpleasant complications for the patient. Analgesic hypertrophic gastritis and gastrointestinal bleeding come first to mind. Abnormal hemostasis due to hypopro-thrombinemia and impaired platelet function have also been reported. Aspirin is often combined with phenacetin, and the latter drug may produce serious disease of the nephron. There is, however, no good evidence that aspirin itself is incriminated in kidney disease.
