This quasi-experimental psychotherapy outcome study assessed the effects of participation in an 8-week Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) intervention on rumination, psychological distress, and medical symptoms. Members of ongoing MBSR groups at 3 San Francisco Bay Area hospitals volunteered to participate. A heterogeneous sample composed of 32 adults (21 women and 11 men) ages 20-71 completed preand post-intervention measures including the Mindful Attention Awareness Scale (MAAS) (K. W. Brown & R. M. Ryan, 2003), the Brief Symptom Inventory 18 (BSI-18) (L. R. Derogatis, 2001), the Short Response Style Questionnaire (SRSQ) (W. Treynor, R. Gonzalez, & S. Nolen-Hoeksema, 2003), and the Medical Symptom Checklist (MSCL) (J. W. Travis, 1971). This research was intended to replicate and extend aspects of J. Kabat-Zinn's work on MBSR and S.
