Although the earliest description of neonatal lupus erythematosus probably dates back to 1928, McCuistion and Schoch are often credited with the first report published in the Archives of Dermatology in 1954. During the two decades subsequent to their case report, only an occasional patient was described in the literature; however, during the past 10 years, this distinctive form of LE has become a well‐established entity. We now appreciate that the disorder can no longer be considered rare or entirely benign, and that the long‐term prognosis for both mother and infant is cause for concern. In this symposium, several clinicians address these issues and present their views regarding the diagnosis and management of neonatal LE.
