This paper identifies the similarities and differences between nursing an individual as client and nursing a family as client when one uses the Betty Neuman systems model as a guide to practice. Several factors contribute to the decision to initiate an individual‐ or a family‐centered approach. Within the context of the Neuman systems model, a clinical situation illustrates several characteristics that highlight features of the two approaches.
