A common laboratory finding in the intensive care unit patient with acute renal failure is hypocalcemia. When this is present in association with hypotension the question of the potential therapeutic value of intravenous calcium arises. I have heard conflicting views as to the value of giving calcium in this setting. Is it likely to be beneficial, harmful or of undetermined value?
