Summary This review has provided a chronologic background to our current understanding of diabetic retinopathy: epidemiologically, pathophysiologically, and in terms of treatment modalities. Our options for sight‐saving and/or restoration have been greatly expanded over a short period of time, and continue to be explored. Current large‐scale multi‐center studies promise to yield invaluable information in this regard. The scientific community, working in concert will ultimately conquer the ravages of diabetes. For the moment, however, the battle is far from over.
