Twenty‐five women who tried in vitro fertilization and embryo transfer (IVF/ET) at six hospitals were interviewed. All expressed satisfaction with the procedure, but some voiced concerns about the way they were treated. Their comments, together with a review of IVF clinic promotional literature and the medical literature, suggest the need to investigate the way this technology is marketed, particularly the way success rates are calculated and communicated to patients, hospitals sell experimental procedures to patients, and physicians disclose the risks and disappointing possibilities during attempts at IVF/ET.
