In the third commentary in our Roundtable evidence is presented that malnutrition around the time of conception can cause fetal malformation. However, disagreeing with the analysis of the Wynns in the last Roundtable, the authors present evidence that in mothers who have an inadequate increase in triceps skin fold thickness a balanced protein energy supplement resulted in increased fetal growth. Supplementation ofother mothers was ineffective, or, as in Rush et al., it had harmful effects.
