This article reports on maternal and infant care in China, including the physical facilities and customs. There is little attention to organized childbirth and parent education, support in labor, or maternal‐infant contact, in part due to crowded maternity and nursery facilities. Acupuncture is used for many medical indications. Intensive maternal‐fetal and newborn care is beginning, and a 3‐level regional referral System is being used in larger metropolitan centers.
