The process of changing from an enthusiastic childbirth educator through stages of unease, discontent, and disillusionment is described. The source of burn‐out was a growing realization of the disparity between the humane childbirth practices described in classes and the routines of the hospital. Childbirth educators can feel free of this conflict of interest only when they receive referrals from community sources, and establish themselves as representatives of the parents rather than the hospital and doctors.
