A review is made of the human and laboratory studies of bioeffects of ultrasound. These include developmental, hematological, neurological, behavioral, immune and genetic effects after exposures to ultrasound in doses now used clinically. Some problems with the human and laboratory studies are described. It is questioned whether curves of intensity/exposure times can be drawn to delineate safe usage of ultrasound without more data on long‐ and short‐term effects in animals and humans.
