The principles and research problems of teratology as related to foods and additives are reviewed. A report is made of the medical literature on teratogenicity of caffeine, nitrosamines, fungal metabolites (aflatoxins), potato blight, artificial sweeteners, Red dye no. 2, and alcohol. Some research problems in teratogenicity of foods and additives are discussed.
