The authors review the history and prevalence of alcoholism in Russia and describe current treatment efforts. As the Russian people struggle to establish political and economic democracy, the devastating cost of alcoholism threatens the success of Russian reforms. Initial results of applying Western treatment approaches in a Moscow patient population are promising and suggest the need for a more widespread integration of Russian and Western treatment efforts.
