The authors present a model of integrated services for the outpatient treatment of patients comorbid for psychoactive substance use disorders and schizophrenia. First, the authors consider the implications of dual diagnoses for the design of effective treatments. Second, they stress the importance of integrating components from both psychiatric and substance abuse treatment domains. Finally, they describe a pilot treatment project integrating psychiatric and substance abuse treatment and outline a longitudinal research effort that will test its efficacy.
