By simple analysis of spectral reflectance curves of molded plastic samples containing cadmium pigment (red, orange, or yellow), parameters are obtained which describe both the color properties of the pigment and the underlying structural factors which cause them. The color parameters defined are hue, dirtiness (that is, low chroma or saturation), and change in dirtiness on processing. The ranges of observed values of these parameters can be related to pigment structure parameters such as insufficient crystal growth, crystal distortion due to excessive mechanical working, presence of impurities, or mixing of pigments with different hue. The values of the dirtiness parameter correlate well with the visual appearance of the samples.
