Lìghtness (value), hue, and saturation (chroma) are the three important factors to be considered in the design of a color‐order system. The development of these attributes is traced from 600 B.C. to the present. Special attention is paid to the intrinsic lightness levels of the various colors, which determine their places in color diagrams. The three‐dimensional schematic color perception diagram is described, and its utility for the designer is explained. For the artist this diagram is an important tool, helping him to understand the relationships among the colors in his work. It can aid the scientist in understanding the thought processes of the artist and designer, and in explaining their choice of color placement in a color‐order system. Such a diagram can help everyone understand the natural relationships among colors.
