With modern reflectance spectrophotometers, using digital ratio recording, precision depends mainly on the linearity of the photomultipliers. A simple method is described, which allows the calibration of the multiplier response. It consists of a mirror assembly that uses a fraction of the measuring light for generating steps in the reflectance scale. From the step heights as a function of the reflectance, the multiplier response can be evaluated. Maximum deviations from linearity of ±0.3% were found for multipliers with S‐10 cathodes, and excellent linearity for multipliers with S‐20 cathodes.
