Summary: A prospective, double‐blind randomized trial was carried out at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, involving 4 groups of patients receiving a single intravenous dose of placebo, ampicillin, ampicillin and metronidazole, and ampicillin and sulbactam before operation. No difference in postoperative morbidity was present between the 4 groups of patients.
