Summary: A programme of cervical cytology screening showed that women admitted to hospital with non‐gynaecological disease have a higher prevalence of carcinoma of the cervix and its precursors than the general population. Approximately one‐third of all patients with invasive or in situ carcinoma of the cervix had been inpatients in the preceding 5 years; thus, admission to hospital must be regarded as a strong indication for screening. The greatest benefit from this type of screening would be achieved if all patients had a smear taken as part of the admission examination.
